Most GIF editing is corrective rather than creative: the clip is too long, too big to send, playing too fast, or framed wrong. Each tool below does one of those jobs and returns a new file, leaving your original alone. Because GIF is such an inefficient format, editing is also the main way to make one small enough to actually send.

The order to do things in when a GIF is too big

Trim first. Every frame you remove is data you no longer have to compress, and GIF stores each frame nearly independently, so cutting a ten-second clip to three removes roughly seventy per cent of the file before anything else happens. Crop next, to lose parts of the frame that were never the point. Then resize, which scales the remaining pixels down quadratically — halving both dimensions removes about three quarters of what is left. Only then compress, which reduces the palette and re-encodes what remains. Doing this in reverse wastes effort: compressing a ten-second GIF and then trimming it to three throws away most of the work.

Speed changes drop frames or duplicate them

GIF has no timeline to stretch — it is a list of frames with a delay attached to each. Speeding a clip up either shortens those delays or discards frames outright; slowing it down lengthens the delays, which makes motion look stuttery because there are no in-between frames to show. That means speeding up is usually clean and often makes the file smaller, while slowing down past about half speed starts to look jerky. If a clip needs to be genuinely slower and smooth, go back to the original video and re-export at a higher frame rate rather than stretching the GIF.

Why a boomerang loops so much better than a plain one

A normal GIF loops by jumping from the last frame straight back to the first, and unless the clip was filmed to loop, that jump is visible every time. A boomerang plays the clip forward and then backward, so the last frame shown is always adjacent to the next one played and the seam disappears. The cost is that the file roughly doubles in frames, so trim before you boomerang, not after. It works best on short clips with clear back-and-forth motion and poorly on anything where the direction of travel obviously matters, like text scrolling or someone walking through a door.

Editing is lossy, so keep the original

Each edit re-encodes the animation and re-derives its colour palette, so repeatedly editing an already-edited GIF degrades it: bands widen, dithering noise accumulates, and the file often grows rather than shrinks. Do your edits in one pass from the best source you have, ideally from the original video rather than from a GIF someone sent you. These tools always produce a new file for download and never modify what is on your disk, so the original is safe as long as you keep it.

What is the fastest way to make a GIF smaller?

Can I edit a GIF someone sent me?

Yes. Drop it in and it works like any other file. Bear in mind it has already been through at least one encoding pass, so it will not be as clean as starting from the original video.

Why does my GIF still loop with a visible jump?

Because the last frame does not resemble the first. Either trim to a section that starts and ends similarly, or use Boomerang, which plays forward and back so the seam disappears.
