Keep it short to keep it small
GIF is an old format that stores full frames, so file size grows fast with length, resolution and frame rate. For a light, shareable GIF, keep the clip to a few seconds and a modest size. If the result is too heavy, resize it down or compress it afterwards — or consider GIF to MP4, since video is far more efficient for longer clips.
How big will the GIF be?
GIF is an old format and much less efficient than video. As a guide, from our tests at 480 px wide and 12 frames per second: 5 seconds of video makes a GIF of about 2–4.5 MB, 10 seconds about 6–9 MB. To keep it small, pick a shorter clip with Start and Length, lower the width to 320 px, or reduce the frame rate to 8–10 fps. Videos narrower than the width you choose are never enlarged. For anything longer than about 10 seconds, an MP4 is the better choice — it's often 10× smaller.
Which videos work
MP4 (H.264 and HEVC/H.265, including iPhone videos), MOV, WebM (VP8/VP9), MKV and AVI all convert. The conversion runs in your browser with a video engine that downloads once (about 30 MB) the first time you use any GIF tool. Files up to 300 MB can be opened, but a short clip of a long video converts much faster than the whole file.
